Each of E. M. Forster's five novels-The Longest journey, Where Angels Fear to Tread, Room with a View. Howards End, and A Passage to India-is here analyzed within the framework of Forster's cultural heritage nineteenth-century liberalism and humanism. In tracing Forster's family and educational background, his religious and political heritage, and his relation to the "Bloomsbury Group," Mr. Crews reveals the growing melancholy in Forster's acceptance of "the perils of humanism."Originally published in 1962.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
