The renowned Maronite scholar Ibrahim al-Haqlani, better known in the West by his Latinized name Abraham Echellensis, was born in 1605 and went on to have a successful career as a philosopher and linguist. In order to mark the 400th anniversary of his death, a symposium was held in 2005 at Notre Dame University-Louaize in honor of al-Haqlani and his contributions to scholarship. The papers presented at that conference, in both Arabic and French, are gathered in the present volume, and they treat various aspects of al-Haqlani’s life, career, and lasting impact in Maronite scholarship. The work is organized in three thematic sections, and each section contains contributions by scholars who are well-suited to assess al-Haqlani and his place within Maronite history and the broader history of scholarship.
