Als die achtzehnjährige Berlinerin Helmina von Chézy im Jahre 1801 in Paris eintrifft, hat die Absicherung ihres Lebensunterhalts höchste Priorität. So etabliert sie sich rasch als kompetente Journalistin, verfasst für deutsche Blätter, darunter Schlegels Europa, unzählige Beiträge über das quirlige Leben in der französischen Hauptstadt, befreundet sich dabei mit allen, die in Paris den kulturellen Ton angeben, bis sie 1804 beschließt, das große zusammenhängende Buch zu schreiben: Leben und Kunst in Paris seit Napoleon I.
