Das Lesen gehört zu den wichtigsten Kulturtechniken des Menschen und hat wesentlich zur kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung beigetragen. Lesen. Ein interdisziplinäres Handbuch nähert sich dem komplexen Phänomen aus unterschiedlichen Analyseperspektiven. Neurobiologie, Kognitionspsychologie, Sprachpsychologie und Linguistik erforschen die Voraussetzungen und Grundlagen des Lesens als Verstehensprozess und Sprachverarbeitung. Die medientechnische Perspektive und die Semiotik beschreiben die unterschiedlichen Lesemedien von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart als Übertragungskanäle und Anordnungen von Schrift- und Bildzeichen (Typographie), die Informationen über Zeit und Raum bereitstellen. Organisationen und Institutionen wirken auf Lesen als soziales Handeln in der Gesellschaft ein. Thematisiert werden Lesen in sozialen Beziehungen, Maßnahmen der Leseförderung und Bereitstellorganisationen wie Buchhandel und Bibliothek. Die handlungstheoretische Perspektive schließlich geht von den Funktionen und Leistungen der unterschiedlichen Lesemedien aus und betrachtet Mediennutzung und Lesen als soziales Handeln des Einzelnen und in der Gesellschaft. Dies wird in historischer Perspektive vertieft und Lesestoffe, Leseverhalten und Lesefunktionen von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart beleuchtet.Das vorliegende Standardwerk zeichnet sich durch einen strikt interdisziplinären Zugang aus.
