Im 19. Jahrhundert pilgerten Hunderte von jungen Kunstschülern aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum nach Paris, um an der École des beaux-arts und in den Lehrateliers von Malerstars wie Jacques-Louis David, Paul Delaroche oder Thomas Couture zu studieren. Das zweibändige Lexikon Pariser Lehrjahre (1793-1870) macht bislang weitgehend unbekannte Daten und Fakten der Ausbildung junger Maler zugänglich und liefert wichtige Erkenntnisse über die Bedeutung von Paris als Ausbildungsort, den Werdegang mehrerer Malergenerationen und die transnationale Kunstproduktion im 19. Jahrhundert. Der erste Band befasst sich mit den Jahren unmittelbar nach der Französischen Revolution und endet mit der Schließung des beliebten Ateliers von Paul Delaroche 1843. Die Beschäftigung mit den Pariser Lehrjahren deutscher Malerinnen und Maler zwischen 1793 und 1870 eröffnet weitreichende Perspektiven. Der Ansatz, transnationale Künstlermobilität gegen nationale Kategorien des kunsthistorischen Diskurses auszuspielen, zeigt Möglichkeiten auf, wie Kunstgeschichte anders geschrieben werden könnte. Einen Künstler kurzerhand mit einem nationalen Etikett zu versehen, erweist sich häufig als willkürliche Zuschreibung, die die Komplexität des Kunstschaffens vereinfacht und vereinheitlicht. Einige deutsche Maler, die in Paris studiert hatten, wurden später von der deutschen Kunstkritik als "Franzosen" angesehen und dafür oft gescholten. Die - meist ideologisch motivierte - Vorstellung nationaler Schulen, die die Kunstgeschichte größtenteils unkritisch fortführt, wird hier anhand der differenzierten Darstellung transnationaler Erfahrungen in ein neues Licht gestellt und hinterfragt. Darüber hinaus gewährt die Untersuchung der Pariser Lehrjahre einen einzigartigen Einblick in die Existenzfragen der jungen Künstlergenerationen. Wie wird man Künstler? Welche beruflichen Entscheidungen werden gefällt und mit welchen Folgen? Gesellschaftliche, moralische, ideologische und ästhetische Überlegungen treten zu Tage - sowie ein Bewusstsein für die Macht des Zufalls -, die die Bedingungen des Kunstschaffens greifbar machen. Sie zeichnet ein ganz neues Bild der künstlerischen Jugend des 19. Jahrhunderts zwischen grandiosen Erfolgsgeschichten und unverwirklichten Künstlerträumen. Im Gegensatz zur üblichen Kunstgeschichte, die sich meist nur mit arrivierten Künstlern auseinandersetzt, tauchen hier bekannte wie in Vergessenheit geratene Existenzen auf, die die Vielschichtigkeit und Komplexität der Kunstproduktion in dieser Zeit deutlich machen. In diesem Zusammenhang gewinnt das Fazit von Eduard Magnus eine neue Schärfe: In der Fremde, unter dem Einfluss der zahlreichen, heftigen und vielfältigen Impulse der französischen Hauptstadt, konnten junge Maler den Weg zu sich selbst finden. |

The 19th century is frequently referred to as the “century of nationalisms.” Indeed, in the art history of the period the idea of national schools of art had broad currency. However, both of these constructs are heavily contradicted by historical reality, as they fail to appreciate transnational currents in the development of artistic expression as well as the international mobility of artists – particularly during their formative years. From 1800 onward young artists from the German-speaking world flocked to the Paris studios of Jacques-Louis David. Forty years later, they were even more numerous in the studios of Paul Delaroche and Thomas Couture. The goal of this encyclopedia is to provide a complete picture of this German-French exchange. It provides a register of German-speaking artists who received their training between 1793 and 1870 in the École des Beaux-Arts, private studios, and outside of formal institutions in Paris. The encyclopedia’s individual articles investigate intellectual and ideological motivations as well as artistic, sociological, personal, and political contexts. The encyclopedia thus makes a fundamental contribution to issues related to the transnational education of artists. |
