No one was more operative in advancing and shaping the development of theatre studies in Germany (or elsewhere) than Max Herrmann (1865-1942). He was the author of the first standard work on this new discipline and initiated the foundation of the world's first theatre studies centre (Institut für Theaterwissenschaft) in Berlin, an institution soon to achieve international renown. Approaching the subject from a variety of angles, the author traces the difficult process of emancipation that early theatre studies went through and delineates the cardinal role played by Herrmann in that process. The result is an entirely new perspective on the 'foundation' of theatre studies. |

Wie andere Fächer hat auch die Theaterwissenschaft einen schwierigen Emanzipationsprozeß durchkämpfen müssen, an dem Max Herrmann (1865-1942) maßgeblich beteiligt war: Seit 1900 hielt er regelmäßig Vorlesungen zur Theatergeschichte und verfaßte das erste Standardwerk der neuen Disziplin. Durch seine Initiative wurde 1923 in Berlin das weltweit erste eigenständige Institut für Theaterwissenschaft gegründet. Max Herrmann gilt heute als international anerkannter 'Gründungsvater' der Theaterwissenschaft. Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert den Prozeß der Institutionalisierung auf mehreren Ebenen: Sie diskutiert Methoden der Wissenschaftsgeschichte, fragt nach dem Wandel von bürgerlichen Bildungsidealen im 19. Jahrhundert, und sie durchleuchtet die Traditionen der Theaterforschung im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Die Studie liefert erstmals eine ausführliche Biographie Max Herrmanns, und sie beschreibt seine Beiträge zur Theaterwissenschaft im Kontext von zeitgeschichtlichen Strömungen und den Arbeiten anderer Wissenschaftler. Schließlich wird auch die Rezeption von Herrmanns Werk im In- und Ausland dargestellt. Zum Teil unveröffentlichte Materialien im Anhang bieten dem Leser die Möglichkeit, das vom Verfasser entworfene neue Herrmann-Bild zu vertiefen. Die Arbeit ist grundlegend für jede Beschäftigung mit der Entwicklung der Theaterwissenschaft, darüber hinaus bezieht sie auch die Geschichte anderer Geisteswissenschaften mit ein, von der Germanistik über die Archäologie bis hin zur Völkerkunde. |
