Die Untersuchung verknüpft diskursanalytische, medienhistorische und gattungstheoretische Fragestellungen, um ein neues Licht auf die Vorgeschichte neuzeitlicher Subjektivität und ihrer literarischen Repräsentation zu werfen. Im Zentrum steht der Zusammenhang zwischen Lesen, Schreiben und Subjektkonstitution: Das vormoderne Subjekt gelangt durch Lektüre zu identitätsstiftender Selbsterkenntnis, diese besitzt ein notwendiges Pendant in bestimmten Schreibverfahren. Die Untersuchung rekonstruiert die antiken Wurzeln der schriftgestützen Subjektivität, beleuchtet ihre Affinität zu spezifischen Darstellungsformen (Dialog, Brief, Bekenntnis) und zeichnet ihre Transformation im Übergang zum Mittelalter und zur frühen Neuzeit nach. Sie macht den historischen Prozess sichtbar, in dem der Psychagoge durch das Buch, die praktische askesis durch geistige Übung und der philosophische Dialog durch das innere Selbstgespräch ersetzt werden. In kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit Michel Foucault zeigt sie auf, dass eine dezidiert ästhetische Form von Subjektivität erst in dem Moment entsteht, als unter dem Einfluss nominalistischer Erkenntnisskepsis und frühhumanistischen Geschichtsbewusstseins antike Selbsttechniken und augustinische Selbsthermeneutik eine widersprüchliche Verbindung eingehen. Die Schrift, vormals ein Instrument der symbolischen Ordnung, wird nun imaginär aufgeladen, so dass das Individuum auch noch aus seiner im Schreibakt erfahrenen Zerrissenheit einen narzisstischen Genuss zu ziehen vermag. |

Discourse-analytic, media-historical, and genre-theoretical approaches are combined here to cast new light on the pre-history of modern subjectivity and its literary representation. Of central concern is the connection between reading, writing, and the constitution of the Subject. The study reveals the ancient roots of this writing-based form of subjectivity, reveals its affinity to specific literary forms of representation, and traces its transformation in the transition to the Christian Middle Ages and the early modern age. |
