Die »Indulgentiae ecclesiarum urbis Romae« sind der in Spätmittelalter und Früher Neuzeit wichtigste Pilgerführer für die Stadt Rom; sie beschreiben in aller Regel die sieben Hauptkirchen (S. Croce, S. Giovanni in Laterano, S. Lorenzo fuori le Mura, S. Maria Maggiore, S. Pablo fuori le Mura, S. Pietro in Vaticano, S. Sebastiano) sowie einige weitere Gotteshäuser Roms. Die Beschreibungen konzentrieren sich vor allem auf die Reliquien und Ablässe der Kirchen, enthalten jedoch auch Angaben zu deren Gründungsgeschichten, Ausstattung und liturgischen Funktionen (etwa als Stationskirchen). Die Forschung der letzten Jahrzehnte hat sich vor allem den lateinischen Fassungen der »Indulgentiae« gewidmet. Es zeigt sich jedoch, daß deren Übersetzungen den Vorlagen keineswegs wörtlich entsprechen, sondern eigene Schwerpunkte setzen und bereits aus diesem Grund besondere Aufmerksamkeit verdienen. Im vorliegenden Band werden deswegen (nach einer Darstellung der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Textes) mehrere deutsche und niederländische Fassungen der »Indulgentiae« erstmalig kritisch ediert; die wichtigste dieser Fassungen ist wohl der in den Frühdrucken überlieferte deutsche Text, der unter dem Titel »Mirabilia Romae vel potius Historia et descriptio urbis Romae« bekannt ist. Die nachfolgenden Untersuchungen zu den Quellen des Textes zeigen u.a., daß die in den römischen Kirchen befindlichen Weiheinschriften des 12./13. Jahrhunderts als Basis für die Angaben in den »Indulgentiae« gedient haben könnten; darüber hinaus wertet der Kommentar aus, welche neuen Informationen die »Indulgentiae« zu den Themen Ablaßerwerb und Reliquienverehrung bereithalten. In einem Kapitel zur ›Pilgerfahrt im Geist‹ wird schließlich gezeigt, wie die »Indulgentiae« die Andachtsübungen der Gläubigen auch außerhalb Roms beeinflußten. |

The »Indulgentiae ecclesiarum urbis Romae« was the most important guide for late medieval pilgrims to Rome. It describes Rome's seven main churches (and selected others), making special reference to indulgences and relics but also touching on the history of these churches and their architecture (e.g. the number and style of altars and chapels). The present volume is a critical edition of the major German and Dutch versions of the text. The commentaries examine the »Indulgentiae« for the light it casts on questions pertaining to the history of religious piety (obtaining indulgences, veneration of relics, 'pilgrimages in spirit'). |
