Der Band gibt erstmals eine ausführliche Darstellung der Geschichte der Deutschen Gesellschaft in Leipzig von ihren Anfängen (1697) bis zu ihrer Erneuerung unter der Leitung von Johann Christoph Gottsched (ca. 1730). Da die Leipziger Gesellschaft das Vorbild für die spätere Gründung zahlreicher gleichartiger Gesellschaften im gesamten deutschen Sprachgebiet abgab, ist die historiographische Erschließung ihrer Entwicklung eine Voraussetzung für die noch ausstehende intensivere Beschäftigung mit dem Sozietätstyp Deutsche Gesellschaft. In kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit der bisherigen Literatur wird gezeigt, daß die Geschichte der Gesellschaft bis zum Auftreten Gottscheds keineswegs nur das eher belanglose Vorspiel der "eigentlichen" Historie der dann so berühmten Sozietät gewesen ist. Eingehend wird die kulturelle Bedeutung der Oberlausitz als Heimat aller frühen Mitglieder der Gesellschaft berücksichtigt. Es folgen Analysen der handschriftlich überlieferten dichterischen Produktion der Gesellschaft und biographische Darstellungen zu ihren Mitgliedern. Den Schwerpunkt im zweiten Teil des Werkes bildet die Schilderung der von Gottsched initiierten, aber nicht allein von ihm getragenen Reform der Gesellschaft. Abschließend wird ein Blick auf die Initiativen der erneuerten Sozietät gerichtet, die ihren Namen bald in Deutschland bekannt werden ließen. Die Untersuchung beruht weithin auf der Auswertung bisher kaum oder überhaupt nicht herangezogener Quellen (Drucke und Handschriften). Einige der wichtigsten Stücke werden im Anhang des Buches ediert. |

The volume provides the first detailed account of the history of the scholarly society Deutsche Gesellschaft in Leipzig from its beginnings (1697) to the new start (ca. 1730) under the chairmanship of Johann Christoph Gottsched. Major emphasis is placed on the hitherto neglected early years of the Gesellschaft, knowledge of which is essential for the understanding of the later development it underwent. Special reference is made to the literary works of the members and their biographies. A further central topic is the aims, background, and evolution of the reforms engineered by Gottsched within the society. |
