Born in Budapest in 1938, Dezsö Tandori is a novelist, playwright, translator, and graphic artist, as well as one of Hungary's most celebrated poets. Here is a booklength selection of his work. Brilliantly eccentric, and characterized by an astonishing formal dexterity, these poems address fundamental issues: the effort to establish personal identity in an impersonal world, the conflicting demands--private, social, and historical--that provide the texture of a lived moment, and the necessity of affirmation that finds its locus in the act of writing.Originally published in 1987.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
