In seeking to reconstruct the past of this important African society, the author has drawn upon ethnographic and linguistic evidence, travelers' accounts, a substantial body of Somali oral traditions, and recollections gathered from several visits to the country. By combining oral tradition with traditional historiography, Cassanelli reveals the interplay of the precolonial environmental, social, economic, and religious cforces.
