Summary: Exploring the relationships between literature and the visual arts in the Middle Ages, this book examines pictorial representations of the story of Ywain, knight of the Round Table, from the thirteenth through to the fifteenth centuries. Of the images James A. Rushing, Jr., studies, only those found in manuscripts of Chretien de Troyes' Yvain are placed in any obvious relation with a written text, while those many images of Yvain found on wall-paintings, embriodery, and misericords are not accompanied by text at all. Rushing presents a thematic analysis and interpretation of these latter, navigating between the traditional disciplines of literary study and art history.
