Anhand ausgewählter Fallstudien thematisiert das Buch die Bedeutung religiöser Kleidungspraxis für die Träger_innen unterschiedlicher religiöser Traditionen. Entgegen der mit religiöser Kleidung oft in Verbindung gebrachten Assoziationen von Rückständigkeit und Fremdbestimmung zeigt es die Komplexität und Kontingenz von Abwägungs- und Aushandlungsprozessen in alltäglichen vestimentären Entscheidungssituationen auf.Jacqueline Grigo zeigt: Religiöse Kleidung ist nicht nur Ausdruck sozialer Kontrolle oder Marker religiöser Zugehörigkeit respektive Differenz - vielmehr dient sie in vielfältiger Weise der Konstruktion von Identität und sozialer Selbstverortung.
