Summary: Food self-sufficiency is high among the priorities of most Third World countries, yet there are relatively few detailed studies dealing with their attempts to reach this goal. A team of twenty experts—academics, policymakers, advisers, and managers—here address key issues underlying self-sufficiency strategies through an examination of the Sistema Alimentario Mexicano (SAM, Mexican Food System), a program designed to coordinate food production with distribution and consumption.
