Summary: The fourteen essays in this volume, written by anthropologists, geographers, and agricultural economists, were selected to bring social science perspectives to biologically oriented centers by identifying problems and formulating research strategies. Their findings offer special insights into the less favorable farming environments of Asia, Africa, and Latin America—places especially targeted for sustainability projects and where technical "western" agriculture has been least successful.
