Summary: Bei dem Goldenen Esel (Titel in den Handschriften: Metamorphoses) des Apuleius (2. Jh. n. Chr.) handelt es sich um den einzigen vollständig erhaltenen Prosaroman der römischen Literatur und um einen der ganz großen der Weltliteratur. Das von einem Ich-Erzähler dargebotene Geschehen gleicht dem eines pikaresken Romans und hat neuzeitliche Romanciers immer wieder inspiriert. Breite Nachwirkung erlebten auch die eingelegten, z. T. überaus pikanten Novellen, allen voran das „Märchen" von Amor und Psyche, u. a. in Boccaccios Decamerone. Reges Interesse hat auch stets die Beschreibung des Isis-Kults im letzten der elf Bücher geweckt. Eine neue Tusculum-Ausgabe – die alte stammt von 1958 – ist ein Desiderat, weil der Text erst seit den achtziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts auf der Basis der modernen Literaturwissenschaft interpretiert wird (zuletzt von einer international renommierten Forschergruppe in Groningen) und die Resultate dieser Forschung unbedingt bei der Textredaktion, Übersetzung und Erschließung des Werks berücksichtigt werden sollten. Die deutsche Wiedergabe orientiert sich an der Zielsprache, ist aber anders als diejenige der Vorgänger so wörtlich wie möglich und erfüllt somit den Anspruch an eine moderne Bilingue.Summary: The Golden Ass (title in the manuscripts: Metamorphoses) by Apuleius (2nd century AD) is the only completely preserved prose novel in Roman literature and one of the greatest in world literature. The story told by a first-person narrator resembles a picaresque novel and has repeatedly inspired modern novelists. The inserted, sometimes extremely piquant novellas, especially the "fairy tale" of Cupid and Psyche, for example in Boccaccio's Decamerone, also had a broad impact. The description of the Isis cult in the last of the eleven books has also always aroused great interest. A new Tusculum edition - the old one dates from 1958 - is a desideratum because the text has only been interpreted on the basis of modern literary studies since the 1980s (most recently by an internationally renowned research group in Groningen) and the results of this research should definitely be taken into account when editing, translating and cataloguing the work. The German rendering is based on the target language but, unlike that of its predecessors, is as literal as possible and thus fulfils the requirements of a modern bilingual edition.
