Summary: The long history of Christianity in Lebanon has produced a number of significant religious sites dedicated to the Virgin Mary, particularly in the historic city of Beirut. In the present study, the author provides a historical and geographic overview of the history of Beirut, with a special focus on the religious sites—churches, monasteries, shrines—that are dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This survey also expands to include a survey of other significant religious sites throughout Lebanon, including both Christian and Islamic locations. The text is primarily written in Arabic, though significant portions of the text are also provided in English translation. The work is richly illustrated with both images and maps that enrich the reader’s experience. Anyone interested in the history of Christianity, Christian architecture, or devotion to the Virgin Mary in Lebanon will benefit from this well-documented study.
