520 _aIn 1664, when the English conquered New Amsterdam, the present State of New Jersey had been for some years a part of New Netherland. Dr. Pomfret describes meticulously the founding of the colony, the circumstances of the division between East and West New Jersey, and the various problems which faced the settlers and the proprietors of East New Jersey first under the family of Sir George Carteret and later under the Twenty Four Proprietors.Originally published in 1962.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
