520			_aDie direkten Reden innerhalb der Ilias machen zwei Drittel des Werkes aus und tragen wesentlich zur Entwicklung der Handlung bei. Wie aber sind diese Reden konzipiert? Liegt ihnen ein sorgfältiges rhetorisches Konzept zugrunde, sodass man schon von „rhetorischen“ Reden sprechen kann? In den Studien über antike Rhetorik hat sich die Auffassung durchgesetzt, dass man erst ab dem 5. Jh. v. Chr. vom bewussten Gebrauch einer regelrechten Rhetorik sprechen kann. Vor der Sophistik habe es lediglich eine natürliche Beredsamkeit, einen spontanen, improvisierten und unbewussten Gebrauch des Wortes gegeben. Die antike Homer-Kritik dagegen betrachtete die Reden der Ilias-Helden als rhetorische Meisterstücke, in denen kein Element aus dem Stegreif kommt, sondern alles in Bezug auf die Zielsetzung der Rede sorgfältig ausgewählt und durchdacht ist. Mittels detaillierter Textanalysen und vergleichender Quellenstudien zeigt die vorliegende Monographie, dass Homer in seinen Reden bereits die konkrete Realisierung jener rhetorischen Prinzipien vorweggenommen hat, die später in theoretischen Traktaten systematisiert wurden; somit kann er als Wegbereiter der Rhetorik gelten.
520			_aThe birth of rhetoric is traced back to the 5th century B.C.E., when the first theoretical treatises on rhetoric were drafted. As early as in the speeches of the Iliad however, one can recognize a deliberate and thoughtful use of refined rhetorical techniques, although these techniques were only codified at a much later date. The Homeric orators thus appear to have been influenced by unwritten but nevertheless valid rules of rhetoric. Based on detailed analysis of the most important speeches in the epic and related reflections by the poet, the author reveals Homer as a pioneer of rhetoric.
