520			_aDie Angehörigen der „Kirche des Ostens“, die so genannten Ostsyrer, erreichten mit ihrer Mission Persien, Indien und China. Dabei verbreiteten sie auch das spätantike Bildungsgut des 5./6. Jahrhundert n. Chr., das in ihren Schulen jahrhundertelang gelehrt wurde. Dieser Band untersucht die Präsenz und Funktion griechischen Wissens in verschiedenen Werken und dokumentiert so die Vermittlungsleistung der Ostsyrer zwischen Griechen, Persern und dem frühen Islam. Im Zentrum der Beiträge stehen die Schule von Nisibis mit der "Ursache der Gründung der Schulen" des Barḥaḏbšabbā, die ostsyrische Mystik und ihre Quellen, die Briefe des Patriarchen Timotheos, die hier bezeugte frühe syrische Version des Koran und die Weiterwirkung ostsyrischen Gutes bei Gregor Barhebraeus im 13. Jahrhundert. Insbesondere erinnert der Band an den Erzbischof und Wissenschaftler Mār Addai Scher, seine Leistung für die Erhaltung des ostsyrischen Erbes sowie seinen Märtyrertod in den osmanischen Christenverfolgungen des ersten Weltkriegs.
