520			_aDie systematische Rekonstruktion der poetologischen und literaturkritischen Diskussion zwischen der Revolution von 1848 und der problematischen Moderne des Wilhelminismus stellt das traditionelle Epochenprofil um: Statt des poetischen tritt der programmatische Realismus in den Fokus des Interesses; die Wende zum Realismus erscheint nicht mehr als Rückzug auf bildungsbürgerliche Kompensation, sondern als literaturpolitischer Strategiewechsel, der Parteinahme durch Nationalpädagogik substituiert. Obwohl er sich bis in die achtziger Jahre als offizielle Programmatik des Reiches fühlen kann, werden die idealistischen Konzepte Hayms, Freytags und Spielhagens bald vom urbanen Liberalismus der Gründerzeitkritiker wie Karl Frenzel und Paul Lindau überboten, bevor die Literaturkritik des Naturalismus mit Rückgriff auf jene und polemischer Distanzierung von diesen in schriller Vielstimmigkeit die Moderne proklamiert. Diese Transformation wird vom positivistischen Literaturverständnis der Scherer-Schüler flankiert: Indem sie Literatur zunächst als Untersuchungsgegenstand begreifen, der in Struktur und medialer Logik zu bestimmen ist, lösen sie die ästhetische Beurteilung von inhaltlicher Wertung und eröffnen damit den Weg zum formalen Literaturverständnis der Moderne.
520			_aModernity as a literary 'event' is in fact the result of a long and arduous process marked by critical and poetological disputes and decisively shaping the literary landscape in German-speaking countries from the middle of the century to 1900. Proceeding from the concepts of realistic literary policy formulated by liberalist authors (Haym, Spielhagen, Freytag), moving from there to the self-confident urbanity of Gründerzeit criticism (Karl Frenzel, Paul Lindau), and concluding with the polemical and programmatic journalism of naturalism, the study reconstructs the contemporary settings for the disputes and debates taking place in this half-century. In its course, the influence of the youthful discipline Literary Studies also becomes apparent.
