Die Stellung der evangelischen Kirchen im „Dritten Reich" wird bis heute sehr kontrovers diskutiert. Wie lässt sich deren Verhältnis zum Nationalsozialismus adäquat erfassen? Am Fallbeispiel Schleswig-Holsteins erfolgt nun in drei Teilbänden erstmals eine empirische und differenzierte Positionsbestimmung aller 729 Geistlichen einer Landeskirche. Dazu wird der Blick über den innerkirchlichen „Kampf" zwischen der Bekennenden Kirche (BK) und den Deutschen Christen (DC) hinaus auf das Verhältnis der Pastorenschaft zu Staat und NS-Bewegung geweitet. Die Zusammenführung von Kirchengeschichte und NS-Forschung zeigt, wie stark Kreuz und Hakenkreuz miteinander verschmolzen. Obgleich die Geistlichen ein breites Spektrum an Positionierungen aufweisen, dominierten NS-Kollaboration und NS-Zustimmung deutlich. In der NSDAP, ihren Organisationen und Verbänden arbeiteten Pastoren tatkräftig mit. Auch im Raum der Kirche verbanden etliche Theologen Christentum und Nationalsozialismus, NS-Ideologie und christliche Lehre aufs Engste miteinander. Dies gilt sowohl für die Anhänger der Deutschen Christen als auch für zahlreiche Pastoren der Bekennenden Kirche. Deren Eintreten für die kirchliche Autonomie ging vielfach mit aktiver NS-Kollaboration im NS-Staat einher. Darin bestand kein Widerspruch. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund dieser quellenbasierten Neubewertung des „Kirchenkampfes" ist die evangelische Kirche als NS-herrschaftsbereitender und dann NS-herrschaftstragender Faktor einzuordnen, viel mehr denn als Störmoment. Dabei boten gerade die Kirchen im NS-Staat einen beachtlichen Handlungsspielraum, den die Geistlichen überwiegend ungenutzt ließen: Nur sehr wenige leisteten Widerstand oder wurden Opfer. Band 1 legt zunächst die Hauptergebnisse der Studie dar. Nach der Erläuterung von Theorie, Methodik und Quellenbasis folgt die Klassifikation der schleswig-holsteinischen Geistlichen hinsichtlich ihrer Stellung zum NS-Regime. Die Einteilung der Pastoren basiert auf einer eigens entwickelten, differenzierten Positionierungstypologie sowie einem sozialstatistischen Mess-Modell zur Untersuchung der inneren Einstellung zum Nationalsozialismus. In den Bänden 2 und 3 wird anschließend zur Präzisierung das gesamte NS-bezogene Handeln der Pastorenschaft, systematisiert in einer Handlungstypologie, ausgeleuchtet. In Band 2 erfolgt die Auswertung des weiten Feldes NS-konformen Verhaltens. In Band 3 liegt der Fokus auf NS-nonkonformen Handlungsweisen, Positionsänderungen sowie Sanktionen durch Kirche und Staat. Die Studie liefert am Beispiel der schleswig-holsteinischen Landeskirche erstmals eine umfassende und ausgewogene Grundlage für die Verortung der evangelischen Geistlichkeit im Nationalsozialismus.
