Meuthen's study of the traditions operative in the German Künstlerroman is post-structuralist in its approach and as such advances a counter-concept to the traditional schematic inclusion of this genre in that of the Bildungsroman. It opens up an 'inverse' perspective in which central works of German prose literature are seen as cryptograms of a sophistic counter-movement to the main idealistic currents of European cultural history asserting themselves in the 19th century and thus establishing the 'modernist' perspective. The spectrum of works analyzed ranges from Heinse's »Ardinghello« through central classical and Romantic works, Rilke's »Malte Laurids Brigge« and Thomas Mann's »Doktor Faustus« to Thomas Bernhard's »Untergeher« and Ransmayr's »Letzte Welt«. |

Viele der bekanntesten deutschen Romane behandeln Künstlerschicksale. Doch taucht der Begriff "Künstlerroman" in den literaturtheoretischen Debatten der letzten Jahrzehnte kaum auf. Seit Herbert Marcuses Dissertation (1922) wurde nicht versucht, den Begriff zu etablieren. Das erfolgreichere Bildungsromankonzept verlängert den subjektivistischen Blickwinkel der idealistischen Ästhetik. Demgegenüber eröffnet der Künstlerromanbegriff, wie der Verfasser dsieser Studie ihn konzipiert, eine Perspektive, in der sich die viel berufene "Pathogenese des modernen Subjekts" als Reflex eines grundsätzlichen Dilemmas abendländischen Denkens darstellt. Von diesem kündet der jahrhundertealte Konflikt zwischen Rhetorik und Philosophie, Nietzsches Kunstphilosophie bringt ihn auf die aktuellen Nenner und gegenwärtig zeitigt er die Verstörungen, die der dekonstruktivistische Reflexionsansatz hervorruft. Der Künstlerroman entwächst dem in Deutschland forcierter als andernorts betriebenen Versuch einer ästhetischen Subjektbegründung und dokumentiert sein Scheitern. Das Spektrum der analysierten Werke reicht von Heinses »Ardinghello« und den Hauptwerken klassisch-romantischer Literatur, über Rilkes »Malte« und Thomas Manns »Doktor Faustus« bis hin zu Bernhards »Untergeher« und Ransmayrs »Letzter Welt«. Diese Studie entwickelt auf poststrukturalistischer Basis eine "verkehrte" Sehweise. Auf der Ebene des Dargestellten verlagert sich das Interesse vom Subjekt des ästhetischen Bildungsprozesses auf das Medium dieses Prozesses: die als Bildungsinstrument betrachtete Kunstform. Auf der Darstellungsebene entspricht dem eine Akzentverschiebung vom geistigen auf den materiellen Sprachaspekt, von der Inhalts- auf die Ausdrucksebene, in der sich die traditionelle res-verba-Hierarchie zersetzt. Die behandelten Werke lesen sich in dieser Perspektive als Kryptogramme einer sophistischen Gegenbewegung gegen die idealistischen Hauptströmungen europäischer Kultur. |
